He isn't from Minnesota, he is from Madison Wisconsin. He was the first ever player though from Madison to play for the Gophers. Madison just happens to be the home of the Gophers biggest rival. But I can't blame him for not wanting to play with the Wild, they suck.

The NHL is terrible at negotiating with the players union.

Sure, Phil is a former Gopher and from neighboring Wisconsin, but if the team is going to be a perennial bubble team for the playoffs I can understand why he would decline to go there.

I would say the bigger issue isn’t who they’re going to move out rather all the no trade clauses they’ve handed out over time. Would any of these guys waive? Tough to say. Cooper divides his TOI so much that some of the guys might be inclined to taking on bigger roles with other teams. It’s the same argument I have for anyone who wants to turn Hayes into a 3C. The production will surely be hampered. I don’t know why a GM would go for that but moreso I don’t see the player going for it
- WSCTeton17

I think specifically if they move Callahan they can find a guy like Johnson and make it work. You basically turn two five millionish players into EK and a minimum salary player.

Hayes was a guy I'd have loved as a 3C, but he had such a big year he's going to get overpaid.

Phil might be fine with leaving the Penguins, but I can’t imagine he would want another situation where he isn’t getting the puck in good spots. His most common defensive linemate was Jack Johnson this past season. I can’t imagine he wanted to be moved in a deal where he would still have to play with him.

Wow, RW managed to blame JJ for Phil not accepting the trade. You have to almost admire the commitment.

If hes smart its cap strapped teams and teams Pens would never deal with....Philly, Caps, CBJ, Rags.....So in effect he has a full NTC.

If the return is good enough, you make the trade no matter who the partner is. Sure, you'd rather move him out of division/conference, but not at your own expense.

Sabres are going to turn the corner soon IMO. There is young elite talent for him to play with there...its doubtful he would but you never know.

He kind of has to go now. It sucks to lose him and it now sucks they might have to settle for less in return because of his list and Minny rejection.

I dont think it should of been him being targeted like this and I dont think he deserves it.

The Wild haven’t been a very well managed organization, so in that respect I can understand why Phil would say no. Also goes to show you Phil still wants to win. He’s not content to just make his money and go home.

So yeah... keep Phil.

Absolutely. Any team trying to acquire star players has to convince those players why they’d be making a smart choice. It’s similar to Hall in NJ. Hall wants to be assured that they’re going to be competitive.

I don’t think Fenton would be butthurt over his discussion with Phil. His job is to improve that team and Phil obviously helps that. The bigger concern as RW eluded to is MN possibly moving on. It’s clear they’re ready to move on from Zucker’s contract and teams are interested

I obviously have zero knowledge of anything here but it kinda seems like Phil wants out and that the animosity goes both ways. I don’t think Phil is an issue with the players themselves but within the organization as a whole and with the coaching staff he is one, and that’s pretty much never a tenable situation. Obviously my ideal way to fix this is to just get a new GM and coach, but that’s not gonna happen unless Rutherford pisses off Mario by pursuing a Malkin trade.

I dont get it. Is it simply because hes allegedly (and probably is) weird that coaches and teams dislike him?

Never see chatter from player 'leaks' about disliking Phil, always is a level above. Granted I dont look super hard, but feel like I'd have stumbled into one by now.

He could be beating up his gf or doing lines of coke... but nope, let's hate him because hes strange and talks to himself on the bench.

Yeah I don’t know. Phil seems like a stubborn dude and I think that kills his working relationships with his coaches. Like I said it’s never the players. Mackey has said on several occasions that the players all love Phil and accept his weirdness. He’s just not a management type of guy like the Matt Cullens and Craig Adams of the world.
